Preparation for the Experience

I have personally witnessed the profound shifts in my world, in my consciousness, following psychedelic experiences. I believe preparation on a variety of levels is essential and can make all the difference between a “bad trip,” and a magical, insightful and profound journey. From what I have seen having a plan, knowing your substance and dose, and doing your research allows you to make well-informed choices about your journey.

For over 50 years, those of us in the psychedelic space, have been hearing the words: “Set & Setting.” Set is referring to where you are at. Your mood, beliefs, thoughts, personality, and so on. This includes perceptions, expectations, and recent events and/or past traumas that may influence the experience. The Setting is the physical environment, the surroundings in which the journey will take place.  Will you be inside or outside? Is this recreational or therapeutic and who is going to be there?

I would add an additional “S” here: Support. Research consistently shows us that social support, social interaction, and a strong support system give us the benefits of better coping skills and higher levels of well-being. Community support, providing a sense of connection and belonging, is an important aspect of the psychedelic experience.

Take your time upfront to do your research. Psychedelics can be amazing and also can be shattering. There is no rush on this. Set aside time to consider all the variables. Sadly, I feel the need to note that underground facilitation is illegal in most of the world, and this leaves room for inappropriate or unethical behavior. You need to use discernment and networking and do your research on the individual or the retreat center that you are planning on visiting.

Preparation for a psychedelic experience can be daunting. Let’s talk together about the why, your hopes and intentions, and your path forward.
